The festivities of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres take place on the fifth Sunday after Easter. This is the biggest celebration of the Azores, so the capital city, Ponta Delgada, is full of people of all the other islands as well as immigrants from Portugal mainland, Canada, USA, Brazil, etc..

The first Procession dates from around the 1700. The frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity in that time caused the inhabitants to have a lot of Faith in God, and ask Him for protection against such natural disasters.

Now this festivity is full of emotion and feeling to the image of Senhor Santo Cristo, which you can find in the church Nossa Senhora da Esperança in the rest of the year. It is a Renaissance sculpture full of expressivity and emotion.

That Sunday takes place a multitudinal procession, which runs around the main streets of Ponta Delgada, which are dressed in creative floral rugs to receive the Lord.

Despite the religious sense of this festivity, the main street is filled with chiringuitos and bars where to eat and drink, there are bands and outdoor concerts, inviting people to go out of home, creating a beautiful and unique atmosphere in the city, different from the rest of the year.
